The main focus this week is of course Waves Vienna, one of the best city festivals in Europe, but despite this there are still a few other gigs which are worth your attention this week.
We Were Promised Jetpacks @ B72 – 29.09
With the Fat White Family cancelled, this is the gig of choice for Monday night indie kids as the Scottish band return to Vienna to play at B72. Their new album unravelling comes out at the start of October and they are halfway through a very successful European tour. Make sure Vienna doesn’t disappoint.
You know the summer is over when the Club Nolabel nights return. This isn’t a bad thing though, as it means local indie talent once again has a chance to shine on the B72 stage. It appears to be ladies night this time as August’s FM4 Soundpark act of the month Nicole Jaey will be accompanied by the Lea Santee who is getting a lot of plays on Soundcloud at the minute with her extremely well produced electronica, and nOrah. All three are very talented in their own ways, and it seems to be another well thought-out line-up from Club NoLabel.
If your into opening parties then the Parallel Opening party accompanied by the HVOB EP release party is for you. Altes Zollamt is the location, and it is probably the place to be if you want to head into the early hours.
Waves Vienna @ Vienna – 02.10 – 05-10
Waves Vienna is upon us again. 2014 sees the 3rd year of the city festival which mixes big names with upcoming talent across the city for 3 days. If you haven’t been before, then you are missing out. If you have, then you won’t need us to tell you have good it is. The locations have changed, and sadly Fluc and Odeon are no longer on the cards, and there are no boat locations, which is weird for a festival called Waves, but it also means ticket holders will get the chance to check out some other extraordinary locations like Elysium and Porgy & Bess. For music lovers and managers the conference also offers a chance to learn more about the business.
GUDRUN VON LAXENBURG will be playing a gig at Fluc on Thursday as well for those that don’t want to ride the Waves. Austrian Apparel will support.
If you’re looking for a little more subtle electro then I-Wolf & The Chainreactions will be taking to the stage for Bock auf Kultur in Chelsea.
There is actually a massive counter-programme to Waves on Friday night. Here is the pick of the bunch. Fluc is offering up Reich & Föhn present the Burnt Ones. The band make bubblegum psych electric sleaze punk, and as you would expect from Reich & Föhn, it is music of the highest quality.
Bruch will be presenting a brand new album in Rhiz on Friday night as well supported by Kristy And The Kraks. We love the tracks we have heard so far, definitely an album worth checking out.
ROBB will be filling Cafe Leopold with their perfect blend of lounge music
Philival is 10 @ Gartenbaukino – 04.10
Phil will be celebrating 10 years with a one day festival extravaganza of music and fun at Gartenbaukino with live music, reading and films. Fijuka, Der Nino aus Wien, Tanz Baby and Attwenger are just a few of the highlights.
Vienna is Hamburg on Saturday. Not only is Thees Uhlmann playing at Waves, but Tocotronic will be filling the Museumsquartier with the many classics in their 20 year collection. Pretty much the evening of dreams for fans of German indie music, especially as Thees starts at 11:30pm.
