The fourth edition of Waves Vienna is just around the corner, and it will once again be a showcase for new bands, and the chance to discover music to fall in love with on a drunken October evening. There hasn’t been a bad Waves Festival yet, and this should be same this year.
Like most city festivals however, the amount of bands and distance between locations can make it a logistical nightmare. The venues this time are spread even further across the city, with the likes of Heuer am Karlsplatz, Porgy & Bess, Expedit Lager, Haus der Musik, Flex and Brut amongst others taking over from venues of the past like Fluc, Odeon, and the boats along the danube canal.
To be honest, there is too much good music, the more you listen to the bands, the more you realise you wanna see them all. To make your weekend a little easier, we have picked out 12 bands (6 Austrian, and 6 international) which could prove to be bands you will be talking about for a long time to come, or not, but that is the beauty of seeing bands you might not know isn’t it….?
Five Austrian bands to make the country proud
The Austrian music scene continues to blossom with bands of the highest quality and it is important that these continue to be given a platform to display their talents. The fact the there are so many Austrian bands playing Waves this time made it pretty difficult to just pick six, but here they are.
A BASEMENT IN BLOOM
XPEDIT LAGER THU 2.OCT. 19:15–20:00
Subtle, deep and intense. Music to get lost in your thoughts too, and a good way to slowly start the weekend. Listen to their latest EP stockpiled, handfed and childish architectures here
CHILI AND THE WHALEKILLERS (IS)
HAUS DER MUSIK FRI 3.OCT. 22:15–23:00
What do you get if you combine Austria with Iceland? Chili and the Whalekillers is the answer. Their music is the kind of melodic remedy you might need to mend a broken heart.
HEUER SAT 4.OCT. 21:30–22:15
The indie pop (schlager) four-piece based in Vienna and Berlin continue to progress on their descent to greatness. Fesch is a band which will thrive in the more intimate confines of HEUER on Saturday night. Their mix of 60’s inspired positive negativity, with a dash of Rotifer is the perfect music to shake off the Friday night hangover to.
JOHANN SEBASTIAN BASS
BRUT SAT 4.OCT. 01:45–02:45
Dance, dance, dance, dance! Their electro sound and interesting style should not be missed in the early hours of Saturday morning. Brut is a great location for this as well, if you’re still walking straight and talking normally by the time these guys come on, then you are something wrong.
FLEX CAFÉ IS ALL I NEED THU 2.OCT. 00:00–00:45
If you like your music loud, fuzzy and frantic, then Flex Cafe at 00:00 is where you need to be. Flex Cafe has a reputation for escalation and unexpected little gems when it comes to Waves Festival. Will Bad Weed be the next?
SNOWW CRYSTAL (AT)
FLEXCAFÉ IS ALL I NEED SAT 4.OCT. 00:30–01:15
You cannot beat a good bit of shoegaze. Snoww Crystal make exactly that. Fucking. Good. Shoegaze. Nuff said.
Also worth a mention – Gospel Dating Service, DAWA, Crazy Bitch in a Cave, NIHILS, Neonstream.
