“Muziwutzputzputz Am Weiher”
Austrian indie/folk/rock collective Polkov are set to release their self-titled debut album this week, and will be celebrating this in the Fluc Wanne on the 30th of October. To mark this occassion, SiM caught up with Laurenz from the 6-piece band to talk about all of the important things in life. Like porn names and crazy gigs.
POLKOV‘s songs often combine pop, country and alternative rock elements with three-part folk harmonies and witty lyrics about coming of age, sci-fi, lucid dreaming, physics, romance and video games. Listen to “The Promised Land” below.
Beer or spritzer? In spring and summer; spritzer. In fall and winter; beer.
Your guilty pleasure (musically) is… There’s no such thing as guilty pleasures in pop music
A film that describes your life is…. I think I might have to shoot it myself and it would probably turn out to be a trippy sci-fi flick with lots of cool stuff like quantum mechanics and lucid dreaming in it. Basically a mixture of Vanilla Sky, the Matrix and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
If you were stuck on an island, which celebrity, which book, which film and which album would you HATE to have with you? Sandra Bullock. I can’t think of a book that bad right now, but I’d love to take the I Ching with me. The Picture of Dorian Gray (the 2009 movie – love the book – hate this adaptation), Tree of Life, or Gravity. Any Mumford & Sons album. (SiM – Any band that dislikes Mumford & Sons has already won in our book)
If your music was a flavour, what would it be? Japanese curry
A band you would love to go on tour with is… Broken Social Scene
The best thing to do in winter is… Recording an album.
Your perfect Sunday involves… My guitar, lasagna & a great TV show.
A song you would love to cover? Miley Cyrus – Adore You
Vienna or Graz? Both
The best place to be is… Wherever Polkov is.
4 albums you couldn’t live without and why?
At the Drive-In – Relationship of Command – Still a revelation to me.
Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach – Painted from Memory – Probably one of the best collaborations of all times and they communicated their song ideas by phone and fax.
Billy Joel – The Stranger – The reason I moved to Vienna
Ryuichi Sakamoto – Playing the Piano – pure greatness
The craziest/coolest gig you ever played was… Our first gig with Alex (our guitarist) was pretty intense. We had never rehearsed with him and some of us hadn’t even seen him before that night. He would literally arrive one minute before our set started, walk on stage and play like he had been a part of the band forever.
We all have a porn star name. Take the name of your first pet and the street you grew up on, what would yours be? Muziwutzputzputz Am Weiher
Your celebrity crush is… Mia Wasikowska.
You’re celebrating the release of your debut album in Fluc on the 30th of October. What can fans expect? How would you describe the album? Good music & lots of love. The same goes for the album.
